Anne Frank was a Jewish girl whose diary entry, “The Diary of a Young Jewish Girl,” had a profound effect on subsequent generations. Frank was born on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany, to Otto and Ruth Frank. After escaping Nazi Germany, the Frank family purchased land in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In contrast, the Nazis occupied the Netherlands in 1942. Consequently, the entire family was compelled to conceal itself and managed to endure by doing so in the shadows of Frank’s business. During that time, Anne began to compose her diary.
Her family experienced betrayal in the following months of 1944, and the Germans forced them to work in dreadful conditions in concentration camps. The sole surviving member of the family was her father, who also stumbled upon Anne’s diary. This diary gained global recognition as a manifesto of courage and optimism.
Samantha Smith was the progeny of Jane Goshorn Smith, a social worker and college literature instructor. The date of her birth is June 29, 1972. She composed a letter to Yuri Andropov, the leader of the Soviet Union, when she was ten years old. Samantha aimed to comprehend the underlying factors that contributed to the cold war between the Soviet Union and the United States in her letter. Despite the letter being published in the Soviet newspaper “Pravda,” Andropov failed to respond to her correspondence.
On April 26, 1983, she received a letter from Andropov in which he responded to all of the young girl’s inquiries. In response, an invitation to the Soviet Union was also enclosed. Her writing proficiency rendered her an invaluable asset during peacekeeping missions. Today marked the beginning of Anne and Samantha’s appearance on postage stamps.
