Gauhati: The date when the honorary Supreme Court is hearing a bunch of petitions challenging the controversial amendment of the Citizenship Law, students from Gauhati University had launched a protest within the University premises and set fire to the ‘jati’ (or ethnicity equalling nationhood) destroying the law.
Moon Talukdar, the University’s AJYCP General Secretary, who has become the object of immense scrutiny for going against the party lines, told the media that students across the Northeast Indian region are opposing the CAA unitedly.
“Since today is the hearing date of petitions challenging the CAA at the Supreme Court, and all of us Northeastern students have boycotted classes. We are burning the CAA and warning the Government that no one, no students or the normal citizenry in Assam will accept it. We have faith in the Supreme Court. They have said that India is a secular nation”.
It may be mentioned that the students – especially in Gauhati and Cotton Universities — have spearheaded protests against the CAA in Guwahati city of Assam, the epicenter of the protests against the controversial legislation after it was passed by the Rajya Sabha on December 11 last.
