Days after the violent protests that rocked the Banaras Hindu University last week, chief proctor of BHU, Professor Onkar Nath Singh resigned citing “moral responsibility” on Wednesday. Reportedly, Singh was asked to quit by the HRD ministry that is allegedly unhappy with the way student protests against eve-teasing and harassment on campus were dealt.
The Chief Proctor ensures law and order on the university campus. Earlier, on Tuesday, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of BHU had presented a list of demands, including suspension of vice chancellor GC Tripathi, District Magistrate, SSP of Varanasi and strict action against the culprits.
The Yogi Adityanath government also ordered a judicial inquiry into the violence on campus. Besides, the Varanasi district magistrate asked BHU Registrar to take immediate steps to address concerns of the female students.
Significantly, the university VC’s chair is at risk as he failed to deal with the situation. The UP government intervened after PM Modi and BJP President Amit Shah asked the chief minister about the situation. On Saturday, police resorted to lathi-charge after students were protesting against the molestation of a fellow student.
