Biggest expansion since cold war: Britain’s MI6 to recruit 1000 spies

Britain’s foreign intelligence service MI6 is going to recruit around 1000 spies. This will be one of the biggest expansions since the Cold War as MI6 seeks to harness new technology. MI6 will see its numbers increase around 3,500 by 2020 from around 2,500.

MI6 which does not disclose its staff numbers is seen as one of the world’s most secretive and powerful intelligence groups.

MI6 chief Alex Younger has said this week that the Islamist terrorist threat to the west would endure for years.

Ian Fleming in his novels has depicted the world known fictional character James Bond working for MI6.

MI6 operates overseas and is tasked with defending Britain and its interests
