Blue Monday 2024: Blue Monday occurs annually on the third Monday of January. Suspiusively the most melancholy day of the year, the significance of this day is a source of contention. At this time of year, many of us are stranded in subzero temperatures, and upon reviewing our credit card statements after the holidays, we may realize that we have already abandoned our New Year’s resolutions. Is it a dominance of the color blue on this particular Monday? Continue reading and decide if you agree.
The Blue Monday concept first appeared in 2005 as part of a public relations ploy involving a press release from the British travel company Sky Travel. The gloomiest day of the year was designated as the third Monday in January, according to a formula referencing psychologist Dr. Cliff Arnall. This equation accurately determines the day that is most discouraging on an annual level.
Arnall’s formula considers numerous variables, such as the prevailing weather conditions during this season, individuals’ likely debt levels, the period following Christmas and New Year’s resolutions, generally diminished motivation, and a sense of urgency to engage in action.
Ongoing debates have surrounded this concept ever since its introduction. While this theory may appear logical at first glance, it is nevertheless regarded as pseudoscience by certain authorities. The science underlying the formula is subject to frequent scrutiny and questioning due to concerns that it may oversimplify melancholy. A colleague of Arnall’s at the university, Dr. Dean Burnett, remarked, “A 24-hour depression does not exist.”
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a pathological state characterized by melancholy that may become apparent during specific seasons. However, as Dr. Burnett argues, the condition does not persist for a single day. Among the possible symptoms of SAD are irritability, a chronically depressed mood, and feelings of worthlessness. It can potentially impact as many as 10 million Americans or 3% of the population.
Notwithstanding the controversy surrounding the concept, corporations swiftly adopted Blue Monday as an opportunity to market products that could alleviate a pessimistic outlook, thereby perpetuating the usage of the name.
Arnall then formally apologized for misrepresenting the depressed capacity of the third Monday of January. He has restarted a campaign to promote mental health and the steps needed to achieve it.
