Nearly 101 Indira Canteens, one of Karnataka Government’s most ambitious projects to serve affordable food to everyone, will roll out on Wednesday. Notably, these canteens will serve breakfast at Rs 5 and lunch and dinner at Rs 10.  Congress vice-president, Rahul Gandhi has inaugurated the first canteen in Jayanagar, Bangalore.

Gandhi has also addressed Congress party workers after the inauguration. Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah terms it to be a “historic day” in Karnataka’s fight against “hunger and malnutrition.”

“Today is a historic day for Karnataka, in our fight against hunger and malnutrition, with Indira Canteens getting launched across Bengaluru,” he tweeted. “Indira Canteen will play a significant role in alleviating urban hunger, especially helping the working class and migrant labour in #NammaBengaluru,” he added.

Reportedly, people can eat food without paying anything in any of these canteens on the first day. Karnataka CM had declared this project when he presented the budget on March this year.
