Brew Monday 2024 (US): Brew Monday, which falls on January 15 this year, is a day when people who might otherwise find it difficult to arrange a meeting due to the difficulties of a chilly, gloomy winter day can do so online, over the phone, or in person. Established in 1953 by a vicar named Chad Varah, the international charity “Samaritans” (which does not endorse any particular religious denomination or sect) was responsible for establishing the day.
Commencing an exploration of the historical origins of Brew Monday with the original biblical parable of the Good Samaritan is a wise decision. Criminals assault a traveler, leaving him or her injured and nearly naked by the side of the road. While the sun begins to rise, a Jewish priest encounters the burglary scene; however, the priest does not notice that the victim is a Jew and proceeds to walk away. A short time later, a Levite passes by the individual without extending any assistance. A Samaritan, who has historically been an adversary of the Jews, ultimately appears and abandons his political agenda to save and shelter the man.
Presently, the charitable organization Samaritans functions in this manner. The organization has experienced numerous leadership transitions and acquisitions over the past six decades, while also expanding beyond its country of origin, the United Kingdom, to the United States, Asia, and other regions. The Samaritans received more than five million calls for assistance annually by 2014. To encourage groups of friends to remain in touch and share their problems, they launched the “Brew Monday” campaign in 2020. Their primary objective has always been to administer a toll-free helpline, which is located at 116-123 in the United Kingdom.
As Brew Monday is organized to generate funds for the continuous operations of Samaritans, it does contain commercial content. Additionally, we advise staying within the limits of financial means. Nonetheless, if that is not possible, designate a Monday this winter to communicate with a friend who needs affirmation regarding their value and affection.
Presently, across multiple nations, Samaritans receive millions of phone calls, emails, and other forms of communication, wherein they provide confidential support to individuals experiencing emotional distress, including thoughts of self-harm. In recent years, the organization has promoted the practice of designating a specific Monday, particularly during the winter season, for a group gathering involving tea and pastries, during which members can freely share their concerns without apprehension of retaliation.

An individual who is compassionate and selflessly assists others.
A mere 141 Samaritans were remaining as of 1919. Half of them currently reside in Holon (south of Tel Aviv), while the remaining half inhabit the mountain. Their population exceeds 800. Their religious community is among the most ancient and smallest in the world, and their songs are among the oldest in the world.
The Samaritans, in reality, are an exceptional people whose origins can be traced back to biblical times. According to conventional wisdom, the Assyrians repopulated Israel with people from the eastern region of Samaria after the infamous Babylonian Captivity, during which the Assyrians captured the Jews and took them captive in 721 BC.

It is our conviction that extending support to lonely friends through a phone call or email today, irrespective of the day being Monday, is a prudent course of action, even in the absence of an official fundraising initiative.
While work-from-home volunteering is not an option and Samaritan volunteers are required to complete a recruitment and training process, you may be inspired to locate the nearest physical office and inquire about phone manpower assistance. How about positive karma?
Samaritans’ 2013 publication of suicide reporting guidelines has been honored with numerous accolades.
The contemporary Samaritans, notwithstanding their initial religious association, do not condemn suicide as a sinful act and do not mandate respondents to express suicidal thoughts; rather, they receive a substantial volume of calls from individuals who do not feel compelled to commit self-harm.
Samaritans receive assistance requests from around the globe via electronic communications; this number has increased since the organization merged with “Befrienders Worldwide,” a charity that operates under comparable principles.
In 2014, Samaritans provided a temporary application that assessed the tweets of a user’s contacts and generated an alert if the artificial intelligence identified indications of emotional distress. However, the application was discontinued as a result of concerns surrounding the potential exploitation of vulnerable individuals by internet trolls.
Volunteers from Samaritans undergo comprehensive practical and sensitivity training. During this time, they acquire the skills necessary to pose open-ended inquiries and motivate individuals seeking assistance to navigate their paths forward, rather than providing specific guidance.
