Britons in large number opting for German citizenship before Brexit

Follow Newsd On

A large number of Britons took German citizenship in 2016 with the UK voting to leave the European Union, as per the German Federal Statistics Office. Notably, German officials granted citizenship to 2,865 UK nationals last year. In 2015, only 600 were granted German citizenship.

Only 3.9 percent of Britons, who have lived in Germany for a decade or longer have taken local citizenship, suggests data. The statistics indicates that further increases may lie ahead as the UK exits the EU.

EU is to exit Britain in March 2019. The massive increase in people rushing for a German passport indicates that many Britons are reluctant to stay and see the ultimate result.

The vagueness over the future status of British nationals living and working in other EU nations augmented with Theresa May’s election disaster. She lost majority and left undermined just days before Brexit talks are due to start.
