The protest and crackdown have now reached Delhi’s Seelampur area, where protesters threw stones at policemen, who fired at the crowd and used tear gas shells.

The crowd was protesting against violence during a police crackdown on a protest at the Jamia Millia University on Sunday evening.

At least two policemen were injured, according to a news agency. It quoted a witness as saying that a “peaceful protest against the Citizenship law got out of hand.”

Also, New Seelampur police station was set on fire amid the violent protests.

The entry and exit gates at three metro stations have been shut, according to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. Cars were damaged and roads strewn with rocks while small fires on the road sent smoke into the air.

According to a senior police officer, the protest began around 12 pm and the people from the area gathered at a prominent crossing.

The protesters shouted slogans against the act, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the government.
