Can’t deny an individual his rights to consume non-veg food: Allahabad HC to UP govt

On Friday, the Allahabad High Court said that government cannot deny an individual his rights to consume non-veg food. This decision comes after the court heard over 20 petitions filed against the Uttar Pradesh government after UP CM Yogi Adityanath ordered a crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses.

According to reports, the court has directed the state government to provide such businessmen with new licences and renew the old ones. The court further added that those whose licence has been expired and those who want a new licence could apply to the food safety department.

The judgement was passed by Justice AP Shahi and Justice Sanjay Harkauli.

Notably, soon after the BJP government came to power in Uttar Pradesh and Yogi Adityanath took oath as the chief minister of the state, the police and the bureaucracy were asked to clamp down on the illegal slaughterhouses in the state, which they have duly done over the past few weeks with an iron fist. However, this blanket ban issued faced a lot of criticism from the meat sellers as many were left jobless after the rule was implemented.
