The ‘shoebill’ is one of the most well-known bird in the world due to it’s massive bill shaped like a shoe.
The scientific name for the bird is Balaeniceps rex. It can be found in freshwater wetlands throughout parts of East and Central Africa. It is commonly known as the stork however it is related more to pelicans.
The species is classed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List.
According to BirdLife International, the population has faced many threats such as habitat loss, hunting, disturbance around nests and changes to the climate.
Casio have chosen to use the ‘shoebill’ as a main feature in order to raise awareness around wildlife conservation.
This new G-Shock watch is part of Casio’s ongoing ‘Love The Sea And The Earth’ initiative. Casio have partnered with environmental organisations since the 1990s.
Earthwatch Japan is linked to the global Earthwatch Institute. They help fund and volunteer for field research, conservation of biodiversity and scientific research.
A percentage of the profits from the sales of the GW-9503KJ will go towards helping Earthwatch Japan.
The watch uses bio-based plastics for the major plastic components of the watch such as the case, bezel and band. It also has special packaging using recycled paper.
