Census 2021 to be carried as per the existing pattern in Punjab

Chandigarh: In the Vidhan Sabha session, the Punjab Government has conveyed it to the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India that the Census 2021 will be followed the same as the old pattern, the counting of each and every person will take place irrespective of their religion.

In the two day session held last month, the Assembly while passing a resolution against the controversial subject of CAA made a statement that the Census would be carried out as the existing pattern.

The issue to carry forward the Census was discussed in an informal meeting between Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India Vivek Joshi.

A government official said that the government has no issues with the Census. He added to it that Census and NPR are two separate issues and there are certain reservations against the NPR exercise that needs to addressed by the Centre. The Congress Government will be consulting the party high command will be sending the required amendments to the Centre before deciding the future course of action, said the official.

On February 14, a meeting is scheduled between the Deputy Commissioners and the Census Department, to carry forward the exercise of Census 2021.
