Panaji, Oct 28 (IANS) With the price of onion shooting up in the state, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday said that the vegetable, which is an essential commodity in the Indian kitchen, would be provided at a cheaper cost via the state’s public distribution system network.

“Each ration card holder will be given three kg onion at the cost of Rs 32-33 per kg,” Sawant told reporters at the state Secretariat on Wednesday.

The government, said Sawant, was in the process of sourcing supplies of onion via National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India and the supply via Goa’s PDS system would be in effect after a fortnight.

Amid a sudden spurt in the prices, onion in the Goan market is currently priced between Rs 80 to Rs 90 per kg.
