CJP ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ Protest: Delhi continues to be under heightened security alert ahead of the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) planned protest titled Lehra Do Tiranga coming up on Friday, October 16.
Central Park in Connaught Place would be closed off from the public on October 16-17, according to an announcement by New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). The decision came after authorities cited administrative reasons behind shutting down the park in the heart of India’s capital city.
This follows a series of protests against the demand for resigning the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, along with some controversies regarding the revision of electoral rolls. Authorities are working hard on securing central Delhi ahead of CJP’s demonstration.
According to the NDMC notice dated October 15, Central Park in Connaught Place will remain shut to the general public for two days. Although citing administrative reasons as the basis for the closure, there seems to be no explicit mention of its connection to the CJP rally.
In the notice dated October 15, the civic body said, “It is hereby informed that the Central Park, Connaught Place, shall remain closed for general public on 16th October 2026 & 17th October 2026, due to administrative reasons.”
As one can understand, the civic body’s move might seem surprising given that the party had been planning to hold its rally at this iconic space, which is frequented by people who pass through Connaught Place for shopping and tourism purposes.
So if you have plans to go to this popular site in the city, remember to read up on such access-related announcements beforehand to avoid inconvenience during your visit.
Founder Abhijeet Dipke also asked people to come with their national flags along with others to Central Park at 5pm today (October 16).
In related developments, CJP leaders Saurav Das & Ashutosh Ranka have been arrested recently after they had taken part in protests against government policies. They are currently being held under judicial custody for 5 days while another party member Ajinkya Shinde has been released from jail on his own bond.
The arrests came after a clash happened between protesters and police at Jantar Mantar which is no longer a designated protest site. Authorities allege that those involved trespassed, violated prohibitory orders and obstructed public servants.
Dipke said that raising the national flag shouldn’t be considered a crime and urged his supporters outside Delhi to conduct similar Tiranga marches in their city.
Security has been heightened all around the area of Connaught Place as well as Jantar Mantar ahead of the proposed gathering. As reported by media sources, paramilitary forces will be deployed at several points while barricades would come into use to control people’s movement across the locality.
The police force too confirmed this deployment process adding that there was no way for anyone to protest at Connaught Place which itself wasn’t on the list of places where protests could take place. In fact, other areas including Ramliya ground, Burari ground, and Cbd ground in East Delhi had also been marked out to conduct permissible demonstration processes.
Today the Delhi High Court did not agree to issue any order to restrain the CJP’s planned demonstration. In course of these proceedings, we also note that the Delhi Police assured the Court that they will take all possible steps as per the law to ensure regulation of the gathering.
In addition to this, the march was slated for amidst the backdrop of the ongoing contention around arrest of members of CJP & the party’s campaign around irregularities in the process of revision of electoral rolls.
A petition was filed with the court over worries about possible disruptions of activities and public movement related to Connaught Place businesses/vendors. While the High Court did not give permission for protests without proper clearances, it refused to put restraint on the CJP’s actions, according to reports.
