India today overtook the United Kingdom to become the fourth most affected country by the coronavirus after recording a record daily spike in new cases. According to a tally maintained by Worldometer, India currently has 2,97,001 cases while the UK has 2,91,409. India is only behind the US, Brazil and Russia now.
The number of recovered Covid-19 patients exceeded the total active cases in India by a margin of 1,573 for the first time on Wednesday, even as the country reported 9,985 coronavirus cases and 279 casualties in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data. The number of active cases in the country stands at 1,33,632, while 1,35,205 people have been treated and discharged. The total number of infections crossed the 2.7 lakh-mark to reach 2,76,583 on Wednesday, including 7,745 deaths.
Globally, as many as 7,244,108 people have been infected by the pandemic so far, and 4,11,217 have died. As the world struggles to flatten the curve of the virus, a Harvard study suggested that the coronavirus hit Wuhan far earlier than reported-a report China dismissed as “incredibly ridiculous”.

Maharashtra on Thursday recorded its highest single-day jump in cases with 3,607 new cases on Thursday. The total number of cases in the state rose to 97,648.
The MCGM said that 97 deaths and 1,540 new cases of coronavirus were reported in Mumbai on Thursday. The total number of cases in Mumbai is now 53,985.

As many as 441 people have been detained in Manipur for not wearing masks and not maintaining social distancing in public places amid the Covid-19 outbreak, police said. A total of 467 vehicles were also seized from their possession, they said. The accused were produced before courts on Wednesday and a total fine of Rs 71,300 was imposed on them, a release issued by Additional Director General of Police, L Kailun said. Those violating the safety norms will face legal action under the National Disaster Management Act, 2005, it added. A total of 311 Covid-19 cases have been reported in Manipur till Wednesday, of which 248 are active.

China has reported 15 new coronavirus cases, including 11 confirmed imported infections, the health authority here said on Thursday. For the first time since the outbreak of Covid-19 in India, the number of recovered cases exceeded the number of ‘active’ cases on Wednesday. “As many as 5,991 patients were cured of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. This takes the total number of patients recovered to 1,35,205, while the total number of active cases is now 1,33,632. For the first time, the total number of recovered patients has exceeded the active cases. The recovery rate now stands at 48.88%,” the health ministry said in a statement. The deaths were highest in a day: 149 in the state—the previous highest toll was 139 (on June 5)—and 97 in Mumbai, whose previous highest 24-hour toll was 64 (on June 8). The state also saw its highest single-day rise in cases (3,254), which took the total cases to 94,041 just three months after the infection first arrived in the state. Mumbai witnessed 1,567 cases.
