Coronavirus live updates: Record 8.3 lakh samples tested in a day

India scaled a new high by testing over 8.3 lakh samples in last 24 hours, the highest tested for Covid-19 in a day so far, even as new cases continued to increase registering a record single-day surge of 66,999 cases. The government maintained that increasing number of positive cases should be seen in tandem with the positivity rate and recovery of patients.

The death toll due to COVID-19 climbed to 47,033 with 942 people succumbing to the disease in the last 24 hours, health ministry data updated at 8 am showed.

The case fatality rate in the country has declined to 1.96 per cent. There are 6,53,622 active COVID-19 cases in the country presently, which accounts for 27.27 per cent of its total caseload. India crossed the 20-lakh mark in terms of COVID-19 cases on August 7.

3-day-old boy 'bleeds to death' after nasal swab test at Agartala hospital

A three-day-old baby died in Tripura on Wednesday, barely an hour after his swab sample was collected for testing at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC). His father has alleged that the baby suffered a nasal injury while his swab was being collected, which caused his death, reports Biswendu Bhattacharjee. The mother of the baby had tested positive for Covid-19 in a rapid antigen test on August 10. Following doctors' advice, health workers collected swabs from the baby. "But soon afterwards, my son started bleeding profusely from the nose and died," the father said.

North Korea lifts virus lockdown at border town

Duterte to use Russia vaccine after final tests

The Philippines will begin large-scale human testing of Russia’s vaccine in October, but President Duterte will not receive the inoculation until regulators guarantee its safety. Duterte had offered himself up as a guinea pig for the very first jab, expressing “huge trust” in the vaccine. But his spokesman said Duterte was to receive the vaccine no earlier than May 1 — weeks after the Russian-funded Phase 3 clinical trial is due to end in March.
