Valour Day (Shaurya Diwas) 2023: Every year on April 9th, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Valour Day (Shaurya Diwas) is marked in honour of the gallant men who serve the Force. The 58th CRPF Valour Day will occur in 2023. At the Sardar Post in the Gujarati Rann of Kutch, a small group of the CRPF made history on this day in 1965 by repulsing an invasion by a Pakistani force that was many times larger. 34 Pakistani soldiers were killed and four were captured by the CRPF personnel. Six members of the CRPF who had reached martyrdom were killed in the fighting.

India’s largest Central Armed Police Force is the Central Reserve Police Force. The Ministry of Home Affairs of the Government of India is in charge of its operations. The major responsibility of the CRPF is to support state and union territory police forces in their efforts to uphold the rule of law and fight insurgency.

CRPF Valour Day: Background and Importance

On the night between April 8 and 9, 1965, 3500 members of Pakistan’s 51st Infantry Brigade—comprising the 18 Punjab Battalion, the 8 Frontier Rifles, and the 6 Baluch Battalion launched the covert operation “Desert Hawk” against border positions in the Rann of Kutch. The bravery of Head Constable Bhawana Ram, who was stationed on the eastern edge of Sardar Post, was largely responsible for the intruders’ demoralisation and eventual evacuation from the post.

Why is it called Valor Day?

On April 9, 1965, a small group of the CRPF engaged in combat with Pakistan in the Rann of Kutch, killing 34 Pakistani soldiers. This was the first time a full-fledged infantry brigade had engaged the Pakistani army in battle and won. Six members of the CRPF died in this conflict. Every year, the Valour Day is observed as a way to honour these heroic soldiers.

Results of the CRPF

Before the creation of the border security force in 1965, the CRPF maintained the India-Pakistan border. All five terrorists who assaulted the Indian Parliament in 2001 were slain by the CRPF. CRPF members are now carrying out counterinsurgency operations in India. To combat the Naxalite movement in the nation, the CRPF established a branch known as the Commando Batallion for Resolute Action in 2008.
