Dance of the Seven Veils Day 2024: The Dance of the Seven Veils Day, observed annually on January 22, honors the execution of John the Baptist, one of the most significant events in the Bible. Did you know that although the Dance of the Seven Veils had its origins in the Bible, it did not receive its name until 1893, when the English translation of Oscar Wilde’s 1891 French play “Salomé” was completed? The Dance of the Seven Veils is comparable to belly dancing and has its roots in the Middle East. The performer typically dons a bikini top, pantaloons, bracelets, anklets, rings, and occasionally a pair of finger cymbals when performing this dance. Scarves are required for dancing as well.
The sequence of events that culminated in John the Baptist’s decapitation is the source of the Dance of the Seven Veils. John the Baptist was incarcerated by King Herod Antipas, as stated in Matthew 14, due to his critique of John the Baptist’s matrimonial union with Herodias, an individual who had previously been married to Antipas’s half-brother Herod II. Antipas was delighted as his niece danced with him and his visitors on the occasion of his birthday. This prompted him to guarantee her any item she requested. Her niece agreed to have the head of John the Baptist placed on a platter, following the persuasion of her mother, Herodias. Despite his remorse, Antipas issued the command for its presentation to her.
According to a narrative by the Romano-Jewish historian Josephus, the niece was named Salomé; however, the dance was omitted from his account. The routine debuted in the English translation of Oscar Wilde’s “Salomé,” which was written in 1891. The stage direction was included in the English text as follows: “Salomé dances the seven veils.”
It is believed that earlier French writers like Gustave Flaubert and Arthur O’Shaughnessy influenced Wilde. In his play, Wilde transformed the dance from a public performance that the king and his guests attended to a private dance that he only experienced.
Strauss incorporated the Dance of the Seven Veils into his operatic adaptation of “Salomé” from 1905. Although the dance was originally intended to be completely respectful, numerous productions transformed it into an erotic performance. An instance of this was a New York production of “Salomé” in 1907.
The Strauss opera and The Wilde paved the way for film adaptations of the dance. Included in this category are the 1953 film “Salomé,” the 1908 Vitagraph production “Salomé” or “Dance of the Seven Veils,” and the 1961 film “King of Kings.”
Dance of the Seven Veils Day has been observed as an unofficial holiday since 1907.
