Delhi Police Detain Rahul Gandhi: Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav were detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday after leading a sit-in protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence at Lok Kalyan Marg. The demonstration was organised to ask for accountability regarding the police action against student protesters from the day before. It ended up escalating the political clash between the Opposition and the Centre.

The protest started after senior Congress leaders marched towards the Prime Minister residence, accusing the government of using excessive force on students during Monday demonstrations. Opposition leaders also renewed their call for a conversation inside Parliament on the issue saying the worries raised by students needed a proper official reply.

Protest Near PM’s Residence

Television footage and visuals from the protest showed Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge, Akhilesh Yadav and several Opposition MPs sitting on the road near the Prime Minister’s residence while raising slogans. As police moved to clear the high-security zone, officers detained multiple leaders and escorted them to police vehicles.

Congress alleged that several of its leaders were forcibly removed from the protest site. Videos circulated by the party showed security personnel carrying or escorting protesters away after they refused to disperse. Some reports also showed Rahul Gandhi being physically removed during the operation.

Congress Demands Accountability Over Police Action

Before reaching the Prime Minister’s residence, Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders visited students reportedly injured during Monday’s police action. The party said the protest aimed to seek answers from the government over what it described as police excesses against young demonstrators.

In a statement posted on social media, Rahul Gandhi said the government was avoiding accountability and refusing to debate the matter in Parliament, while reiterating the Opposition’s demand for action over the incident.

During the protest, Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh met Rahul Gandhi at the demonstration site and urged the Opposition to call off the dharna. According to reports, he said that the government was ready to talk about issues tied to the students concerns, in Parliament. Even with the outreach, the protest went on until police detained the demonstrators.

These detentions are expected to further sharpen the political face off between the ruling NDA government and Opposition parties. In a separate video, he can be seen lying down during the protest and talking to reporters, taunting the government by saying, “Democracy in India is happening right now.” Congress has criticised the police action as a bid to curb democratic protest, while Delhi Police moved to clear the demonstrators from one of the country’s most sensitive security zones.
