DeSantis Administration Enacts Ban on Pro-Palestinian Group: The administration of Ron DeSantis has urged state universities to prohibit a pro-Palestinian student organization from their campuses on the grounds that it allegedly provides support to Hamas militants, which is linked to terrorism.
Some college students have demonstrated solidarity with the Palestinians in the midst of the intensifying Israeli assaults on Gaza. This has prompted censure from specific Jewish academics and prospective employers. However, Florida is going a step further by declaring that Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) supports a “terrorist organization.” State university system Chancellor Ray Rodrigues wrote to university presidents on Tuesday, following Governor Ron DeSantis’s request, instructing them to disband SJP chapters after the national group stated that “Palestinian students in exile are PART of this movement, not in solidarity with this movement.”
Rodrigues stated in the letter, “It is a felony under Florida law to ‘knowingly provide material support… to a designated foreign terrorist organization.’” Hamas was designated as a terrorist group by the U.S. State Department in 1997.
Pro-Palestinian demonstrations took place at academic institutions throughout the United States on Wednesday, including FIU and the University of Miami.
Governor DeSantis’ stance on Israel has become more steadfast in support of the country ever since the Hamas assaults in southern Israel on October 7 erupted anti-Israel and pro-Israel protests globally and prompted Israel to respond with airstrikes. DeSantis has dispatched aircraft to Israel with the purpose of supplying provisions and reuniting Floridians who desire to return home. In addition, he supports a special legislative session that would impose additional sanctions on Iran, a supporter of Hamas, and declare its allegiance to Israel. Aside from that, however, no government has provided evidence directly attributing the attacks to Iran.

Students for Justice in Palestine has maintained a presence on American campuses for several decades, orchestrating regular demonstrations that advocate for Palestinian liberation and boycotts of Israel. Nationally, the loosely connected network asserts to have more than two hundred chapters. Palestine Legal, a group that offers legal assistance to pro-Palestinian organizations, sees the ban on SJP as a continuation of Governor DeSantis’s larger initiatives to restrict free speech on college campuses.
SJP has had a significant influence on the campus movement BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions), which calls for a boycott, divestment, and sanction of Israel due to its treatment of Palestinians. The national organization failed to respond to an email requesting comment at the earliest. Free speech organization the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education declared Florida’s directive dangerous and unconstitutional, contending that the government lacks the legal authority to compel colleges to ban SJP chapters. They declared, “No one’s political beliefs will be safe from government repression so long as it remains unchallenged.”
The prohibition was enforced subsequent to the sole Jewish Republican member of the state legislature renouncing his endorsement of DeSantis in favour of former President Donald Trump during the presidential election. Representative Randy Fine, who has advised DeSantis on matters pertaining to Israel and Jewish policy, disclosed that he had imploresd the administration to intervene against the student organization but did not receive a response until DeSantis openly justified his endorsement switch. Fine said, “It shouldn’t have taken me endorsing Trump to make it happen. I was begging them for two weeks and was just getting the Heisman at every turn,” referring to a college football trophy.
The governor’s office, however, stated that the ban had been in the works for over a week and was unrelated to Representative Fine. DeSantis spokesman Jeremy Redfern dismissed Fine’s claims as political grandstanding, asserting that “Randy Fine is not the centre of our universe.”
Wednesday, numerous student organizations, including Students for Justice in Palestine, have organized a nationwide student strike from college campuses in opposition to U.S. financial support for Israel and in demand of an end to Israeli attacks on Gaza. Numerous campuses, including the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and the University of California, Los Angeles, organized walkouts.
