Polls are to be held for 294 seats in West Bengal, 234 seats in Tamil Nadu, 140 seats in Kerala, 126 seats in Assam and 30 seats in Puducherry.

According to sources, the elections in West Bengal may be held in 7-8 phases, while three-phase elections in Assam are likely. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will see single phase polls, sources said, adding that in Kerala, the election may be held in one or two phases.

The Election Commission of India is likely to announce the dates for the West Bengal and four other states assembly election on Friday.

The EC will hold a press conference at 4.30 PM today during which it is expected to announce the dates for holding assembly elections in four states, including West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and one Union Territory of Puducherry.

The terms of legislative assemblies of four states — Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and West Bengal — are coming to an end in May and June.

In Puducherry, President’s Rule has been imposed and the assembly kept under suspended animation after the V Narayanasamy-led Congress government resigned earlier this week ahead of a vote of confidence.
