Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Monday extended the custody of MK Faizy, President of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), allowing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to interrogate him for an additional three days in connection with a money laundering case. Special Judge Chander Jit Singh approved the extension after the ED had requested an additional five days.
The ED arrested Faizy at Indira Gandhi Airport while he was traveling from Kochi to Delhi. Special public prosecutors Simon Benjamin and Naveen Kumar Matta represented the ED, arguing that Faizy is linked to fund transfers from the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) to SDPI, which they claim operates as PFI’s political front.
Defense counsel contested the allegations, noting that the funds in question were transferred between 2017 and 2019, prior to PFI’s designation as unlawful in September 2022. They argue that the moves were legitimate election funds and claim no incriminating evidence was discovered during Faizy’s initial three-day detention. Despite Faizy’s alleged non-cooperation with 12 ED summonses, the defense asserts he was unjustly arrested.
