Egypt church explosion kills 21, 50 injured

In an explosion at a church in northern Egypt, as many as 21 people have been killed. The blast targeted the St George Coptic church in the city of Tanta, north of Cairo. The attack in the Nile Delta town of Tanta was the latest in a series of assaults on Egypt’s Christian minority

As per reports, the toll of injured people in the Palm Sunday till now is 50. The cause of the blast is yet unknown, however, in the state the Christian minority are often targeted by Islamic militants in the recent years.

In December, a local Islamic State affiliate claimed a suicide bombing at a church in Cairo that killed around 30 people, mostly women, as well as a string of killings in the restive Sinai Peninsula that caused hundreds of Christians to flee to safer areas of the country.

Ahmed Abu Zeid, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, tweeted: “Terrorism hits Egypt again, this time on Palm Sunday. Another obnoxious but failed attempt against all Egyptians.”
