Eligibility for $520 or $260 Rebate Payments this Week

Eligibility for $520 or $260 Rebate Payments: As to how one can determine eligibility, the state of Minnesota is providing a one-time $260 check to a maximum of 128,000 individuals who neglected to submit their claims promptly. How is a claim made? The Minnesota Department of Revenue first issued the checks months ago, but they came with a sixty-day cash-it clause, and more than 100,000 people neglected to submit claims by the deadline.

There is also speculation that the check was discarded because it bore a return address from Montana; however, this will be refuted by the Department of Revenue, which will prominently display its logo and name on the document.

Consequently, the state will bestow a second chance upon those individuals and garner positive public relations despite operating within financial constraints during a period of economic turmoil that affects millions of Americans.

Minnesota Revenue Commissioner Paul Marquart informed the Senate Taxes Committee, “It appears to be a standard check.” “You have a period of two years to cash in that particular one.” Additionally, failure to cash the check within two years results in it being transferred to the unclaimed property folder.

Individuals who are eligible for the rebate but fail to receive it by May 1st should reach out to the Minnesota Department of Revenue at (651-556-3000) for assistance.

How should one make a claim?

The rebate amounts differ according to the adjusted gross income (AGI) of the individual or household for the tax year 2021. Those who had an AGI of $75,000 or lower were eligible to receive a $260 rebate.

Married couples who filed jointly and had an AGI of $150,000 or less were eligible to receive a $520 rebate. In addition, eligible families received an additional $260 per dependent, up to a maximum of three dependents, for a rebate of $1300 in total.

Minnesota waives income tax on rebate checks. But federal tax return taxable income applies. To deduct the rebate as taxable income on their 2023 federal income tax return, recipients will receive Form 1099-MISC.

Disapproving residents say they will continue to owe $26 to $57 in federal taxes after the IRS determined that payments did not meet pandemic aid eligibility requirements.

“I must say that it was a tremendous letdown,” Marquart remarked. “Our working relationship with the IRS is positive.

“But we grudgingly accept the decision, of course.”
