GOP Convention 2026: President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance were both in Dallas on Monday as Republicans met for a midterm gathering. At the Dallas stop, Republicans also brought up Marco Rubio, Ron DeSantis, and Ted Cruz. Some even talked about a possible Vance and Rubio pairing. In the speech’s most striking passage, Vance warned Democrats directly, declaring, “Stay the hell away from my kids.”
He also struck a unifying tone toward the wider party, telling the crowd, “I’m not asking anybody to agree with me on every single issue.”
Even so, no single choice has taken hold. The event made it clear the GOP is looking past Trump, but it is still tied to the political force he helped build.
Trump and other speakers kept returning to a theme about Democrats being extreme or risky. They did not spend most of their time on specific accomplishments.
The point was simple. Republicans said that if they lose control of Congress, Democrats would undo Trump’s work.
This pitch may fire up loyal supporters. Still, it could make outreach harder for independents and swing voters, especially in close districts.

Trump proposed giving $5,000 to every US adult if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress in November.
The proposal would be enormously expensive. Reuters estimates the potential cost at roughly $1.2 trillion, meaning congressional approval and a credible funding mechanism would be required. Trump and Vance have pointed toward tariff revenue, but current collections would not be enough to cover the proposed payout.

The Dallas meeting sent a plain takeaway. Trump still has the lead in the GOP. At the same time, party leaders are already thinking about life after him.
“We’ve got to take care of business this November,” before turning to what comes next. Trump himself has edged closer to endorsing Vance in recent days, telling reporters earlier this week that his vice president was “most likely” his heir apparent, adding, “In all fairness, he’s the vice president”, Vance said.
