With an aim to promote the use of digital modes of payment, the government decided to give encouragement to passengers for booking tickets online by withdrawing service charge from November 23, 2016 to March 31, 2017. And now the offer has extended to June 30, 2017.

“We have received instructions from the ministry of information technology advising railways to extend the incentives at least till June 30, 2017,” said a railway ministry official.

Service charges ranges from Rs 20 to Rs 40 per ticket while booking tickets through IRCTC site. The government waived off the charges after the demonetisation in November last year.

As per the government’s order, the current incentives will continue and there will be no modification till June 30.

Almost an amount of Rs 184 crore has not been realised owing to service charge and service tax between November 23, 2016 and February 28, 2017, as per the railways data.
