The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) GSLV-F09 carrying the South Asia Satellite (GSAT-9) took off from the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh on Friday. The ₹ 235-crore satellite, funded entirely by India, will improve disaster and telecommunication links between six south Asian countries.
According to reports, “This is India’s eleventh GSLV launch and its fourth consecutive flight using an indigenous Cryogenic engine powering the upper stage.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the ISRO scientists after the successful launch. “I congratulate the team of scientists who worked hard for the successful launch of South Asia Satellite. We are very proud of them. The historic occasion has been made better with a surprise- we have leaders of South Asian nations joining us in celebrating this launch,” PM Modi tweeted.
PM Modi was joined by leaders from all the six countries via video conference to address the press.
According to a report, in one of his ‘Mann ki Baat’ programme, Modi had announced that the South Asia Satellite would be India’s “priceless gift” to its neighbouring countries. “On May 5, India will launch the South Asia Satellite. The benefits of this satellite will go a long way in meeting the developmental needs of the countries participating in this project,” PM Modi.
