The Gujarat High Court granted regular bail to Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Atul Vaidya on Tuesday. Vaidya was sentenced to seven years imprisonment in the Gulberg Society massacre case linked to 2002 post Godhra riots in Ahmedabad. This is the first case of a convict getting regular bail in this case.

A division bench led by Justice Abhilasha Kumari declared the verdict while granting bail to Vaidya. “Vaidya’s appeal petition against his conviction is pending and he has already served one year of imprisonment,” said the Court. “Based on the evidence against him, the bail can be granted,” the court added.

Vaidya along with 23 others was convicted for killing 69 people at Gulberg Society, a Muslim neighborhood in June last year. The then chief minister Narendra Modi was also named in the case but, Modi and others were granted a clean chit by the Supreme Court appointed-Special Investigation Team.
