‘Gully Boy 2’ in the Works Without Ranveer-Alia? Reports Hint at New Cast and Fresh Storyline

Gully Boy 2: The hype surrounding a sequel to 2019’s superhit Gully Boy is rippling through social media, but not all of the waves are sunny. Where some fans are excited to return to the grime-infested streets of Indian hip hop, others are wary, particularly as reports indicate a new lineup to supplant the original leads, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. Responses have been everything from intrigue to dismissal, and it has become one of the most buzzworthy possible sequels in recent memory.

Gully Boy 2: Any Chance of a Sequel?

Ever since Gully Boy stole hearts and awards worldwide, director Zoya Akhtar had teased the prospect of broadening the film’s universe. As far back as 2020, she had already verified that a follow-up was being worked on with her co-writer Reema Kagti. The concept was to delve into the Indian hip-hop scene with diverse personalities and new stories.

Now, as per several entertainment portals like Pinkvilla, Koimoi and more, the sequel is supposedly on the cards with a twist. It might not have Ranveer Singh or Alia Bhatt. Vicky Kaushal and Ananya Panday are reportedly to spearhead the lead, directed by Arjun Varain Singh of Kho Gaye Hum Kahan fame. Sources indicate that discussions are in progress, signaling a change in artistic course.

New Faces, New Responses: What the Web is Saying

The internet has responded with a divided reaction. Others admire the idea of taking a clean slate approach with new characters, particularly considering how expansive and exciting India’s underground rap scene has grown.

Not everyone is convinced. A lot of netizens were displeased, commenting the sequel seems redundant without the original pair. A number of social media comments lambasted the move, dubbing it “the sequel no one asked for.” Others wondered if Vicky and Ananya could recreate the raw energy and chemistry that Ranveer and Alia brought to the screen in the original.

A big sticking point for fans is the chemistry of the original leads. Although Gully Boy was lauded for its storytelling and music, a segment of the audience believed that Ranveer’s Murad and Alia’s Safeena’s romance wasn’t the film’s strong point. Some Redditors even characterized their pairing as ‘sibling-like’, where their individual performances shined more than their dynamic together.

Regardless of these takes, you can’t argue that Ranveer and Alia’s presence brought a ton of star power and emotional heft to the movie. A sequel sans them has me thinking if it’ll still be Gully Boy or just another story with a same name.

From what’s being reported, it sounds like Gully Boy 2 may not be a direct follow-up to Murad’s narrative. Instead, it could be something of a spin-off that explores another rapper’s journey, providing a wider view of India’s hip-hop culture.
