Buddha Purnima is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Lord Gautam Buddh, founder of the Buddhist religion. Buddha Purnima is an annual festival and this year it will be marked on May 7 by the followers of Buddhism. The purpose of this festival is to embrace the Buddha’s teaching such as Ahimsa (non-violence), compassion, and praying with the purest feelings.

This festival is very important among Buddhists. Although this day is celebrated by Buddhists as Gautam Buddh Jayanti, Hindus refer to this day as Buddh Purnima (full moon day). The festival is held in the month of Vaisakh because it is usually in May.
