Hariharan Bio: Hariharan was born in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on April 3, 1955. He is an Indian classical and playback singer whose music has been featured in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Telugu films. He is also an established ghazal singer and one of the pioneers of Indian fusion music. Hariharan is a two-time winner of the National Award for playback singing and the 2004 recipient of India’s prestigious Padma Shri award.

Hariharan is a native of Bombay with bachelor’s degrees in both science and law. He is fluent in Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, and English. Son of renowned Carnatic vocalists Shrimati Alamelu and the late H.A.S. Mani, he inherited their virtuosic musical abilities. Alamelu was the first tutor Hariharan had. He learned the fundamentals of Carnatic classical music from her. Early on, he was also exposed to Hindustani music. Hariharan developed a passion for ghazals and began studying Hindustani music with Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan during his teenage years, after being inspired by the songs of Mehdi Hassan. He used to practise singing for thirteen hours per day, refusing to get up until the session was over.

Hariharan and the Pakistani band Strings have collaborated on a song titled “Bolo Bolo.” With Punjabi/bhangra musician Daler Mehndi, he released the album Destiny. He also coined the term “Urdu Blues” on his moderately successful album Kaash, which featured A. Sivamani on percussion, Ustad Rashid Mustafa on tabla, Ustad Liyaqat Ali Khan on sitar, and Ustad Sultan Khan on the sarangi. On October 3, 2010, he also performed the Swagatham song at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
