The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad (JNTU-H) has introduced online courses for the first time, starting this academic session. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) will now be functional in all affiliated colleges of JNTU-H soon.

The program is taking place under the government-run program called SWAYAM(Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) which falls under the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development.

It is said to assist the B.Tech third year R16 batch. The students would be able to select from a list of courses approved by Chairpersons of Board of Studies of the University.

As quoted by Telangana Today, BN Bhandari, Director, Academi & Planning, JNTU-H said, “For the first time, the university is implementing MOOCs. This is being done as per the guidelines of the UGC, AICTE and Ministry of Human Resource Development”.

The coursework will kick off from January 28.

Students of the university would be able to register online for MOOCs at https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/.

MOOC is a course created with an aim of increasing online education participation. The courses usually come with a combination of reading materials, problems sets and online teaching assistants.

The term MOOC was coined by Dave Cormier, University of Prince Edward Island in 2008.
