INS Arihant decoded: Everything you need to know about India’s first nuclear submarine

On Monday, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the successful completion of its first deterrence patrol. Country’s first indigenous nuclear submarine has completed the nuclear triad which was long awaited by the nation.

1. The word Arihant finds its origin in Sanskrit language, meaning – Slayer of Enemies.

2. The vessel weighs 6000 tonnes and was built under Advanced Technology Vessel project at Vishakhapatnam’s Ship Building Centre.

3. Arihant was launched on 26 July 2009, Kargil War Victory Day, Vijay Diwas by the then Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh.

4. A year back, INS Arihant suffered a huge damage which halted the vessel for 10 months.

5. In August 2013, a reactor of Arihant got critical.

6. INS Arihant is powered with four submarine-launched ballistic missiles of K-4 category that comes with a range of 3500 km.

7. India has become only the 6th nation to possess nuclear ballistic missile submarines, following, Russia, the USA, China, France and the UK.

With the addition of INS Arihant to India’s defence arsenal, the much-awaited triad has been completed. The country is now capable to launch nuclear weapons from land, air and sea.
