The world celebrates ‘International Day of Peace’ on September 21. Whereas, this year, ‘Peace Day’ is celebrating 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ‘The Right to Peace’. ‘World Peace Day’ was established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution. Peace Day provides a global share data for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace.

Theme for Peace Day 2018: “The Right to Peace – The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70”

“It is time all nations and all people live up to the words of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which recognizes the inherent dignity and equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human race. This year marks the 70th anniversary of that landmark document,” said Secretary-General António Guterres.

In 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals after realising that the dream of a peaceful world cannot become true unless steps are taken to achieve economic and social development for all people everywhere and ensure that their rights are protected. These sustainable goals included a wide range of issues:

  • Poverty
  • Hunger
  • Health
  • Education
  • Climate Change
  • Gender Equality
  • Water
  • Sanitation
  • Energy
  • Environment
  • Social Justice

Did you ever think what peace actually mean to you? Is it only about the weapon war in between countries? Can only lowering down weapon bring in peace to our world? Are you peaceful? The answer is peace starts from within. Violence can take us nowhere. It is the ideology that rules the heart and the world. Imagination of ‘dawn of a new day’ will remain a distant dream for human unless we understand the value of non-violence as well as ‘peace within’.
