ITR Tax Filing 2026: If you have not filed your Income Tax Return yet then this is a good time to do it. The deadline for ITR 1 and ITR 2 is July 31, 2026, and the Income Tax Department has already said that more than 1.7 crore taxpayers have filed their returns for AY 2026-27.

The department also said that over 10 lakh returns were filed in just one day on July 10, which shows that many people are trying to finish early and avoid the last-minute rush.

What the tax department is telling people

The official Income Tax portal says the due date for AY 2026-27 filing is 31st July, 2026 for the return types covered here. It also says that ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3 and ITR-4 are live on the e-filing portal for AY 2026-27.

The department has also increased support for taxpayers near the deadline. Its latest updates say support lines will work 24×7 from July 25, 2026 until 11:59 pm on July 31, 2026. That is meant to help people who still need help while filing.

Know the Right Assessment year

Tax expert Sunil Garg told Zee Business that people should not mix up the assessment year and the tax year.

He said, “First, taxpayers should understand that the return being filed this year is for Assessment Year 2026-27, not Tax Year 2026-27. The return for Tax Year 2026-27 will be filed next year.” The Income Tax Department’s own help page also explains that AY 2026-27 is for income earned in FY 2025-26, while Tax Year 2026-27 will come later.
