Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha Gherao: Hundreds of students and student groups may soon start a big protest outside the Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha. They are planning it on the same lines as the Cockroach Janta Party’s march to Parliament on August 6.
The main anger is over alleged irregularities and corruption in the exams held by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and the Jharkhand State Staff Selection Commission. Recent reports also say the student movement in Ranchi has already become stronger in the past few days, with large marches and an indefinite satyagraha at Bapu Vatika in Morabadi.
The Special Branch of the Jharkhand government sent an alert on July 28. It warned all districts to stay careful and keep full watch on the situation. The alert was also sent to the Deputy Commissioners of all districts, along with the SSPs of Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad, and the Superintendents of all district and railway departments. Intelligence inputs said students may travel to Ranchi from different parts of the state by road and rail for the gherao.

The students are not only protesting against exam irregularities. They are also raising their voice over delays in scholarships, lack of transparency in competitive exams, and what they call a weak education system. The Special Branch said these were part of the larger reasons behind the agitation. The protest has now turned into a wider movement, with students saying the system has hurt their future and must be fixed.
The agitation has been going on for days at Bapu Vatika in Morabadi. Students under the banner of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission Candidate Justice Forum have been holding an indefinite satyagraha since July 25. On July 29, they also took out a padyatra from Bapu Vatika to Albert Ekka Chowk. During that march, they read the Preamble of the Constitution and sang the National Anthem.

The protest has now pulled in more student groups. On July 30, a large number of students from the AJSU Students’ Union marched from Bapu Vatika in Morabadi to Lok Bhavan.
This shows that the movement is no longer limited to one small group. It is getting wider and louder in Ranchi. At the same time, the JPSC has already faced pressure from the protests, and recent reporting said its mains exam was postponed due to the unrest.
