Over the past few days, an outbreak of bird flu has had a significant impact on the city of Kottayam in the state of Kerala.

Farmers in the region who raise ducks are among those who have been impacted the hardest because the virus has killed about 7,000 of their animals.

On December 12, the government announced the discovery of the virus’s first human case, and on December 13, they began the process of culling birds.

District Collector P K Jayasree chaired an emergency meeting with senior officials of the district on Tuesday to take stock of the situation in the wake of the outbreak in Arpookara and Thalayazham panchayats. The Collector instructed the local bodies and the Animal Husbandry Department to cull and destroy the birds within one km radius of the affected areas under the supervision of the Animal Husbandry Department. The officials have also been directed to take steps to disinfect the area, a District PRD release said.
