Kojagara Lakshmi Puja 2025: Lakshmi Puja, the grand festival dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, has two major observances in India. In most states, Lakshmi Puja is performed on Diwali night, which falls on the Amavasya (new moon) of the Kartik month. Nevertheless, in Bengal, Odisha, Assam, and eastern India, there is another significant celebration known as Kojagara Lakshmi Puja on the Ashwin Purnima (full moon night). The dual tradition of this festival is often confusing in terms of dates, as the people cannot decide if the festival day will be 5th or 6th October in 2025.

Kojagara Lakshmi Puja 2025 Date: 5th or 6th October?

Based on authentic Hindu Panchang sources, the Purnima tithi (full moon) in October 2025 is to start on 6th October at 6:49 AM and to end on 7th October at 4:39 AM.

Therefore, since the night of the 6th October is the full moon, Kojagara Lakshmi Puja should be held on Monday, 6th October 2025.

An alternative reason for the confusion regarding a date of 5th October, is that in some calendars, there is a slight overlap of Purnima with the previous day. Nevertheless, DrikPanchang, GaneshaSpeaks, and BookMyPoojaOnline, are the experts that, without any doubt, set 6 October 2025 as the right Kojagara Lakshmi Puja date.

If it is the Diwali-night Lakshmi Puja tradition that is being followed, then the date would be completely different Monday, 20th October 2025, which is Amavasya.

Hence,

  • Bengal, Assam, Odisha, and Tripura: Kojagara Lakshmi Puja on 6 October 2025
  • The rest of India: Lakshmi Puja on 20 October 2025 (Diwali night)

2. Kalash Sthapana: A vessel that is very holy and it is loaded with water, grains, and mango leaves is installed, and a coconut is placed on top of it.

3. Goddess Lakshmi Invitation: After the chanting of the mantras and the prayers, the worshippers usher the goddess into their domestic sanctuaries with the help of the mantras and prayers.

4. Offerings (Naivedya): The altar is supplied with the best fruits, sweets, rice pudding, and other seasonal delicacies. Puffed rice and milk are the traditional offerings in many places.

5. Aarti and Bhajans: The faces of the worshippers are shining with the performance of Lakshmi Aarti, singing the glories and praises of the goddess for wealth and prosperity, success, and happiness, incessantly.

6. Staying Awake (Jagran): Kojagara’s derivation is the question “Ko Jagari?” or “Who is awake?” The idea is that Goddess Lakshmi gives her blessings to the ones who are awake on this night.

7. Charity (Daan): It is considered very auspicious to give away food, clothes, or money to the needy on this day.
