The Union law ministry will be the first ministry to have its own TV channel that will highlight discussions and constitutional interpretations on crucial issues such as triple talaq and the uniform civil code, as well as debates on important judgments, to blowout legal awareness.

The ministry asked for a distinct channel for this purpose from a bouquet of 32 direct-to-home channels launched by the ministry of human resource development (HRD). The law ministry has already penned to the HRD ministry seeking the operational rights for one channel.

The ministry is also considering to hire foremost Bollywood directors like Prakash Jha to create quality content on legal education for the marginalised. Recently, Jha was appointed by the government to make a short film for the National Legal Services Authority intended for creating legal awareness.

The ministry has also began an open competition for freelance film-makers and students of numerous law schools with a reward of Rs 20,000-Rs 50,000 for five- to 30-minute films on significant matters. “The idea is to create a bank of enriched material on legal issues that can be best used by the common man,” said a senior officer associated with the project.
