As incessant rainfall lashed several parts of Maharashtra on Tuesday and nearly 30 people were killed across the state in separate rain-related incidents flooding the airport and paralysing local trains. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are at the spot to carry out search and rescue operations.
Mumbai recorded its second-highest July rain over a 24-hour period on Tuesday in 44 years after the July 26, 2005, floods that killed more than 1,000 people. It was the highest with 944mm in 24-hours after the torrential downpour, especially in the suburbs, between Monday night and Tuesday morning. However, the quantum of rain was the highest 24-hour July rain in 10 years.
At least three people were killed and 23 missing after a dam in Maharashtra’s coastal Konkan region breached following incessant rains, leading to flood-like situation in downstream villages, officials said Wednesday.
Many buses operated by Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) broke down while some were diverted when rains pummelled Mumbai Monday.
