In a shocking turn of events, curfew hits in Shillong and the adjoining areas late on Friday and mobile internet was also suspended in six districts after a member of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) was killed in a clash with suspected illegal immigrants at Ichamati in the East Khasi Hills.

After the incident, a notification issued by M War Nongbri, the district magistrate of East Khasi Hills, said: “there is the apprehension of serious deterioration of law and order in Shillong and adjoining areas.”

The home department issued an order suspending mobile internet and restricting SMS to five messages across East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills districts for 48 hours.

According to reports, the sources said the build-up to the clash on Friday had started a few days ago with various organisations, led by the KSU, stepping up their demand for an inner-line permit (ILP) system to safeguard the state against infiltration by illegal immigrants.
