Messi sentenced to 21 months in jail for tax fraud

A 21-month jail term to Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has been confirmed by Spain’s Supreme Court on Wednesday. The footballer and his father Jorge, who handles his finances, were convicted in 2016 of defrauding Spain of approximately $4.6 million.

However, he is unlikely to go to prison, as the Spanish law allows sentences under two years to be served under probation.

Jorge Messi’s jail term has been reduced, as he had paid some of the taxes.

The case will now be returned to the Barcelona court, that had originally handed down the judgement.
