Moana Live Action India Release: Disney’s highly anticipated live-action take on Moana is finally, ready to kind of sail off into theatres. After months of waiting and a bunch of small production updates, the studio has now confirmed that the musical fantasy adventure will make its way to cinemas on July 10, 2026.
The film reimagines Disney’s cherished 2016 animated classic using live-action visuals, but it keeps the very same heart, the music, and that curious adventurous spirit that turned the first one into a worldwide hit. Also, this remake is like a full-circle momen, because Dwayne Johnson is back as the legendary demigod Maui and newcomer Catherine Laga’aia steps into the role of Moana.
Disney announced that Moana will hit theatres on July 10, 2026, and the studio also plans an Indian theatrical release on that exact same day.
The movie will be offered in several languages for audiences in India, including English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. So, it should be easier for families across the country to watch it together.
At launch, Moana will be available exclusively in cinemas across India.
As of now, Disney has not announced an official OTT release date. Following Disney’s usual release pattern, the film is expected to arrive on Disney+ (Disney+ Hotstar in India if the current branding and distribution remain unchanged) several weeks or months after its theatrical run. However, the streaming release schedule has not yet been confirmed by Disney.
Main cast includes:
One notable change is that Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated films serves as an executive producer instead of portraying the character onscreen.

Moana The Disney movie is based on the 2016 animated film which transported viewers to the South Pacific about a decade ago. Disney’s live-action film will follow the story of Moana, daughter of Chief Tui, a spirited and adventurous girl who embarks on a quest to save her people and discover herself by setting out across the ocean after the sea calls to her. With the help of Maui, a demi-god, she’ll have to navigate the ocean and its challenges as she tries to return the Heart of Te Fiti.
Dwayne Johnson opened up about Maui and shared that his character is inspired by his grandfather. “The character of Maui was inspired by my grandfather, the great high chief Peter Maivia, who, we lived here in Hawaii, and he passed away here in Hawaii. He’s buried here in Hawaii at Diamond Head, and his charisma, his charm, his voice, his toughness, his hair, beautiful hair by the way, just like Maui. That was my grandfather. What an honour it is for me to embody his spirit.”
Taking the centre stage, Auliʻi Cravalho said, “I’m so grateful that you all are here. Without you, there would be no Moana. And Catherine, I now get a sister. I’m an only child in real life, and I’ve always wanted someone to know what it feels like to have a legacy character. We’re so young, and yet, the waves of impact that Moana leaves is just rippling worldwide, so I share this with you, and I am so grateful. She knocked it out of the park!”
The film is directed by Thomas Kail, an Emmy and Tony Award-winning filmmaker known for helming Broadway’s mega-hit Hamilton. Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller are the co-writers, while the original Oscar-nominated composer Mark Mancina will return to score the film, with new songs also being developed by original co-writer and Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The live-action movie was initially slated for release in 2025 but has now been postponed to summer of 2026. This delay comes after Disney announced a new animated film, Moana 2, which will be released in theaters in late 2024, and has a theatrical run time over five months earlier than its live-action remake.
The trailer has indeed been released. It gives viewers their first glimpse of Catherine Laga’aia as Moana, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reprising his role as Maui.
We see sweeping ocean shots and recreated scenes that will bring back many favorite moments from the animated classic and it confirms that the film is slated to hit theaters on July 10, 2026.
