Farmers from a Madhya Pradesh were literally shocked when they received newly printed Rs 2,000 notes without Mahatma Gandhi’s image on it.
According to a Times of India report, farmers from a remote village in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district received newly printed Rs 2,000 notes without the image of Gandhi from a State Bank of India branch. They thought the notes were fake and approached the bank. Officials took back the notes and said they were “genuine”.
The farmers were told that image of Mahatma Gandhi was missing due to a printing error.
Bank and Police officials quoted by TOI said that many such defective notes were circulating in the region.
The notes, according to the report, were printed at the Bank Note Press in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh.
Earlier, media reported that two variants of new 500 notes were in circulation. RBI admitted that the problem was due to the rush in currency printing.
In another incident, more than 80,000 pieces of Rs 500 notes and Rs 1000 notes were printed by the government Security Paper Mill in Hoshangabad without security threads.
Absence of the silver security thread, which is a measure to check counterfeiting, makes a currency note invalid.
