MS Dhoni IPL 2027: MS Dhoni’s future in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a topic of discussion amongst Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans, as they eagerly wait to know if the former captain will make a comeback for the 2027 season. Former India batter Suresh Raina has now added fuel to the fire, as he refused to comment on Dhoni’s potential return.
According to an exclusive report by The Daily Jagran published on October 13, 2026, Raina was asked regarding Dhoni’s participation in IPL 2027, during an interaction at the Indian Softball Cricket League (ISCL) Season 2 jersey unveiling event in New Delhi. However, the former CSK star chose to remain silent on the subject. “I don’t want to comment on that,” Raina said when asked about Dhoni’s IPL 2027 participation.
Raina, who shared a successful on-field rapport with Dhoni, both for India and CSK, was approached to give an update on the veteran’s potential return to competitive cricket.
“If you cannot hit the ball properly, you can feel embarrassed because people expect you to perform well in these games. Bowling with a tennis ball is also difficult. If you cannot bowl a yorker, the ball can move towards the leg side, and the bounce is different. You need to get your length right and bowl fuller deliveries.
“As Indian cricketers, we also practised with tennis balls, even when preparing for matches on Australian wickets. We used different methods to prepare for the conditions, including practising with water and working on our bounce. Gary Kirsten would also train us using a tennis racket. It had several advantages.
“It is not just about playing with a tennis ball. A leather ball is much harder, and tennis-ball cricket gives youngsters opportunities to develop their skills. I think the initiative taken by ISCL is a very good one,” Raina said.
While Raina has been quiet on the issue, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has voiced optimism regarding the former skipper’s participation in the tournament
In the comments made to India Today on October 13, Viswanathan stated that it depends on Dhoni as the former captain has always communicated his decision on the eve of his arrival in Chennai. The CSK chief executive also added that he is hopeful that Dhoni will return for another season.
In his comments made in August 2026, Viswanathan had stated that Dhoni had not ruled out his participation in the 2027 season and requested fans to wait till then
At 45, Dhoni will have to contend with questions regarding his ability to perform in the physically taxing tournament and it will be up to him to overcome these challenges and make a comeback
It has been widely known that Dhoni always wanted to play his final T20 match in Chennai and it was this desire that motivated the fans’ hopes that he would be back for another season
In his comments made in May 2026, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan expressed his hope that the former captain will return for another season and fulfill his desire to play the final T20 match in Chennai. At the same time, the CSK CEO reiterated that the decision to continue to play in the IPL lies with Dhoni.
