The workers’ union of city’s second largest public transport system, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has threatened for an indefinite strike if their staff does not receive Diwali bonus. BEST has cumulative losses of Rs 2,500 crore.

“Employees received bonus last year, but this time nothing has been stated yet. If they do not receive bonus by October 20 then we will go on a strike,” said Shashank Rao, president of BEST workers’ union, reported HT.

All members backed employees’ demand for a bonus in a BEST committee meeting held recently, but, the management was unwilling to implement due to fund crunch.

Anil Kokil, the chairperson of the BEST committee, said, “I will meet the mayor to discuss the issue on Friday.” The BMC has already announced Diwali bonus to its staff ranging between Rs 2,250 and Rs 14,500.
