Every year on August 7, National Handloom Day is observed to honor the handloom weavers’ of the country and to highlight India’s handloom industry. The day aims at the contribution of handlooms to the socio-economic development of the country and also to increase the income of the weavers.
In 2015, the Union Government had declared August 7 as the National Handloom Day with the objective of generating awareness about the importance of handloom industry to the socio-economic development of the country.
August 7 was chosen as the day to commemorate Swadeshi Movement which was launched on this day in 1905 in Calcutta Town Hall to protest against the partition of Bengal by the British government. The movement had focused on reviving domestic products and production process.
The first National Handloom Day was inaugurated on August 7, 2015, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the centenary of Madras University in Chennai.
The main event of National Handloom Day will be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, and Bhubaneswar has been chosen as the main event due to its rich tradition of Handlooms. More than 50% of total weavers’ population resides in Eastern and North Eastern Regions and most of them are women. The main reason for holding the day at Bhubaneswar is to empower women and girls.
