Later that year, UNOS sent a proposal emphasising the significance of the newly created position of Transplant Financial Coordinator (T.F.C.). In 83 of the 133 institutions that responded to a 1998 national survey of 274 transplant hospitals, employees spent at least half of their time addressing the financial concerns of transplant patients.
Coordinators may verify patients’ insurance coverage, obtain transplant authorization, respond to inquiries, or handle billing and collections on a daily basis. Sixth annual UNOS Transplant Management Forum results were presented. Also presented was a recommendation for formalising the position within the UNOS. After the Board meeting in June 1999, the requested recommendations were implemented.
The T.F.C.A., a non-profit professional organisation, signed an association agreement on April 10, 2001. Its purpose is to streamline the dissemination of useful financial information regarding organ transplants.
