OneTag FASTag Switch Issuer Bank: FASTag users now have a much easier way to change their issuer bank. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has started the OneTag service, which lets people switch to a different FASTag issuer while keeping the same physical tag stuck on their vehicle.
The service was launched by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai on September 11. OneTag is a joint initiative of Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). It is now available through NHAI’s Rajmargyatra mobile app.

Till now changing a FASTag bank meant closing the old tag and going through the process of getting another one. This could be a long and inconvenient process. OneTag is designed to remove that extra work.
With the new system the FASTag already fixed to the vehicle can stay in place. Only the issuer bank changes. This gives users more choice and also cuts down the need for repeated tag production, delivery and replacement.
NHAI said, “The addition of OneTag expands the growing suite of citizen-centric services available on the RajmargYatra App, including FASTag Annual Pass, FASTag Local Pass, Emergency Helpline 1033, MargMitra Help Centre and other commuter-focused services.”
The portability process can be started through the RajmargYatra app. NHAI said, “Users can seamlessly initiate the portability process through the RajmargYatra App by verifying their vehicle details, selecting a new issuer and completing the required onboarding formalities.”
Users first need to enter their vehicle registration number and check whether their FASTag is eligible. The current issuer then sends a six-digit Mobile Verification Code (MVC). After verification, the user can select another issuer bank and finish the customer verification and wallet onboarding with the new bank.
An important part of the process is that the FASTag ID linked to the vehicle registration number doesn’t change. Which means the same physical tag can continue to be used after the bank switch.
Changing the issuer doesn’t mean the money left in the old FASTag wallet disappears. Once the portability process is completed the previous bank closes the old wallet and refunds the available balance after making any applicable adjustments.

Users should also remember that OneTag has a six-month cooling-off period. After a FASTag is moved to a new issuer, it can’t be ported again to another bank until six months have passed.
FASTag already has more than 98% penetration in India’s electronic toll collection system. NHAI said around 13 crore NETC FASTags have been issued, including about 6 crore active tags. The OneTag facility is expected to make issuer changes simpler while keeping the existing tag in use.
