OPPO wants to do a OnePlus, enter US market: Report

San Francisco: Chinese handset maker OPPO is now aiming to foray into the US market, similar to what premium smartphone maker OnePlus did in October 2018.

“Another Chinese phone maker wants to take a crack at the US market. But this one already has a foot in the door in a roundabout way,” Alan Wu, Head of OPPO’s overseas business, said in an interview to CNET on Friday.

He was not specific on timing, but he said he wanted to wait until OPPO gained ground in Europe.

OPPO is the sister-company of popular start-up OnePlus, but it has struggled to gain momentum outside of Asia. It is one of the biggest handset players in China.

It is one of three companies that are under the BBK Electronics umbrella and sister companies include OnePlus and Vivo, both of which are also large smartphone makers.

However, only OnePlus has done well outside of Asia.

With the launch of OnePlus 6T, OnePlus marked its entry into the US after partnering with mobile services operator T-Mobile.

“The OnePlus 6T and T-Mobile’s LTE network were made for each other. Customers have been asking us to help bring OnePlus to the US. We listened and delivered,” John Legere, CEO of T-Mobile, had said.
